More weechesters
My writing time yesterday was spent editing and working on exchange fic, but I make up for it today, by having more weechesters fic for you.

Title: Like the Tides of My Life
Words: ~950
Genre: SPN gen
Rating: G
Summary: Dean has a secret and Sam wants to know what it is.

"Dean, what are you doing?" They're supposed to be packing, but Dean is lying on his back under the coffee table, only his feet and shins poking out.

He doesn't answer. Sam is suddenly sure Dean's dead, but then his foot twitches.

"Just a second," Dean says, like it's unreasonable Sam wants to know what the heck he's doing, and then he wriggles out and stands up. "C'mon," he says, "we need to get packed."

Dad gets back sooner than they expected and it's a mad rush to get in the car and Sam never gets a chance to check the table and see what Dean was up to under there.

They stay three months in the apartment in Louisville. The night before they're due to leave, Sam goes into the kitchen to get some milk before bed and finds Dean on his knees under the kitchen table with a Sharpie.

"What are you doing?" he asks.

"Dropped it," Dean says, and clicks the cap back on.

It's not until they're in the car on the way to Oklahoma that Sam realizes there was no paper or anything else for Dean to write on in the kitchen.

Oklahoma is pretty much a total disaster. The ghost they're after breaks Dad's arm, Dean gets pulled over driving the Impala without a license, and slices his palm open trying to make a fake to take to the cop-shop within the allotted 48 hours.

He swears at the X-acto knife while Sam gets the first aid kit and a towel to mop up the blood. While Sam's stitching the cut together, Dean says, "Sorry, Sammy. I know you hate sewing."

"You're sixteen now," Sam answers, thinking he's probably the only kid in the sixth grade who has ever had to stitch his brother's hand back together. "Why don't you just get a real one?"

Dean looks like that never actually occurred to him.

Before Dean gets around to making a license that isn't covered in blood, Dad finds old Ghostie's bones and they salt and burn and get the hell out of town. Sam lags behind in the motel room long enough to check under the little table inside the door and doesn't find anything suspicious.

He didn't think to check the bedside table though.

Their next stop is Taos, where Dad's friend, Roger, gets Dean a nearly genuine NM drivers license. Dean has a ridiculous grin on his face in the photo like he's thrilled he passed the test, but really he's just laughing at Sam who farted loudly at the moment Roger snapped the picture.

Dad and Roger get out a stack of books after dinner, and Sam and Dean go play pool in the rec room. When Dean leans over to line up a shot on the two, Sam notices something in his back pocket.

He looks closer. "What's with the Sharpies?" he asks.

"What's with the staring at my ass?" Dean replies and sinks two more balls with one shot.

"You wish." Dean probably does think Sam was staring at his ass. He's gotten a totally swelled head since Melanie Simpson dumped the captain of the football team to ask Dean to prom at their last school. "And that doesn't answer my question."

"It's just a pen, Sam. Now watch and learn. I'm kicking your ass here."

He is, too. There's only one solid left besides the black.

They stay two days with Roger before heading north to Colorado. The motel Dad finds is wild: lime green paint, orange and pink accents, tassels on the bed covers. There's a long silver table opposite the door with fake flowers in silver-painted baskets. "Jesus," Dad says when they walk into the room. "What the hell were they thinking here?"

Sam wonders the same thing. He and Dad go pick up some food while Dean cleans the weapons and has a shower. Sam spies the Sharpie in Dean's pocket again while they're eating dinner.

In the morning he checks the silver table, and he sees DW 8-7-95, small, black, tucked into the corner under the tabletop.

He wonders how long Dean's been doing it; leaving his mark wherever they go. And why. He can't say anything with Dad hovering though, if he does it'll sound like tattling. Sam waits until Dad's snoring in the bed next to them and he and Dean are lying side-by-side waiting for sleep to come.

"Why do you do it?" Sam asks, turning so his mouth is close to Dean's ear.

"Because it feels good," Dean whispers. "Why do you do it?"

"I don't." Sam's confused.

"Sammy, I've heard you in the shower. You can't fool me." There's a smirk in Dean's voice that Sam would be able to hear even if he couldn't see Dean's lips in the light bleeding through the curtains.

"Shut up," Sam hisses. Dean is so embarrassing. Sam's only done it twice, and he was quiet. There's no way Dean heard him.

"A boy's got needs, Sammy, is all I'm saying. It's only natural."

"That's not even what I'm talking about." Sam shoves Dean's chest to show he's serious. "Why do you keep putting your initials on stuff?"

"What?" Dean says, but before Sam can open his mouth to answer, he goes on. "You're such a stalker, freak. Go to sleep." Then he rolls over with his back to Sam and pulls the covers up to his ear.

Sam still doesn't get it—Why do graffiti at all if you're going to do it where no one can see?—but he can tell it's not something Dean is going to explain. He rolls over himself and lines his spine up with Dean's, and drifts off feeling his brother breathe against his ribs.

Oh, I like that. Dean, marking where he's been--placing himself somewhere. Making a moment real.

I haven't even started my exchange fic. *sigh* *thumps head against desk*

I really kind of wish Dean had wanted to tell me this story, because I would love to know what he felt like he was getting from this, but I am also thrilled to have been given Sam's POV, and see what it looks like from the outside, Dean's compulsion to make his mark in some way.

I don't always comment when I read fic and I don't want to sound weird but I really, really love you for writing this. As soon as I saw the title I knew I had to read it because Ani Difranco is amazing. This was absolutely lovely and I liked it immensely.

Thank you so much! I'm so so glad you liked this, and especially liked it enough to comment. :D

Ani Difranco is utterly awesome. I think Both Hands is probably my favourite song, so I had to use it, even if it's only probably tangentially related :)

I love this very much! but I was surprised when it ended ! I wonder if something plotty comes next?

I so love the NM driver's license and the wacky grin on Dean's face!

river: christian's armsrivers_bend on November 24th, 2008 07:23 am (UTC)
If something plotty does come next, it hasn't revealed itself to me :)

I didn't even know why Dean was lying under the coffee table when I started out, so was glad to get the graffiti out of the story. These young boys seem to know that I want between 300 and 1000 words for my mini-nano fics, and that's what they deliver. *g*

I'm glad that you loved this though, and I will certainly not turn him away if Dean decides to give me anything more.

He doesn't answer. Sam is suddenly sure Dean's dead, but then his foot twitches.

This is SUCH a heartbreaking line. I believe that this is Sam's immediate dread any time the possibility is there.

Wonderful story, hon. <3

I just had this image of Sam at that age when pretty much everything seems scary because your body is starting to go through all this upheaval, and then to add to that, he's learning more about hunting and what is out there in the world, and how that would translate to his relationship with Dean's safety. I didn't even know what Dean was doing under there, just that Sam got scared he was dead. All of which is to say, thank you! and I'm glad that feels right to you.

I love the idea of Dean leaving something tangible behind. And I love the image of the two brothers sleeping spine to spine, breaths even and matched. It makes me happy, in a purely brotherly way.

"You're sixteen now," Sam answers, thinking he's probably the only kid in the sixth grade who has ever had to stitch his brother's hand back together. "Why don't you just get a real one?"

Dean looks like that never actually occurred to him.

My favorite bit. I love the idea of Dean getting so used to breaking the law, he doesn't even realize when there's a completely legal and legitimate way to do something. Probably continued to flash his fake idea when going for a beer until he was 23. :)

This is such an achingly sad little piece - Sam gets upset about having to move and he bitches endlessly. Dean just keeps it inside and tries to leave a little something of himself behind, a record of his life. Like that motel room will always be a little his, and he can have a place to return to, if he wants. Does that make sense?

Also, the image of Sam and Dean sharing a bed, and Sam whispering in Dean's ear is just gorgeous.
river: spn: hugsrivers_bend on November 24th, 2008 05:30 pm (UTC)
thank you so so much, sweetie! I'm so glad that bit in particular worked for you :D

And that the sadness comes through. The lives they lived, these boys, it just makes me ache!

I love the idea of Dean feeling the need to mark where he's been (not quite territorial marking, but like there's something deeper behind the act--something more desperate, as though he's trying to prove his existence when his whole life is spent avoiding identity for the sake of the work). I also love your use of Ani's lyrics. Really nicely written. :)

Thank you so much.

as though he's trying to prove his existence when his whole life is spent avoiding identity for the sake of the work

I think you've nailed what Sam was only getting glimpses of here. I can only imagine what it must be like to have no physical permanence in the world when your hormones and everything else is in such upheaval too.
mimblexwimblemimblexwimble on November 24th, 2008 04:50 pm (UTC)
This is exceptionally lovely. Dean leaving his mark everywhere, like there needs to be something around to prove that he exists... it's true and achy and makes my heart hurt. I loved the imagery (the boys in bed together, whispering to each other, Dean under the table) and adored the voices. You had the boys perfectly in character.

I also love that while Sam really doesn't understand and still wants to know why Dean leaves his initials around, he's not going to badger Dean.

Excellent job. :)

This was great. Although Dean never quite says why he does it, you feel like you know. It fits well with the boys, because although Sam complained the most about traveling, it is Dean who actually remembers what having a home was like.

I agree with mimblexwimble - the imagery is lovely.

Oh that is such a very cool idea. It's unexpected and yet it fits startlingly well with what we know of Dean's character. It's his own kind of stability. :)
river: dean consortrivers_bend on November 24th, 2008 10:08 pm (UTC)

This makes me so sad. For all Sam's talk of wanting "normal", it's Dean who *needs* it - however he can get it. The fact that he hides it, what he's doing from Sam and his mark from everyone else, only seems to underscore the impermanence, rather than alleviating it. More I think about it, the more it breaks my heart.

river: dean eyelashesrivers_bend on November 24th, 2008 10:10 pm (UTC)
I didn't mean to be heartbreaking, though these boys in their youth completely break my heart, so I shouldn't be surprised :)

Dean really does strike me as someone who would have needed something to cling on to, even if it was really nothing.

dean's leaving his mark on the world! or at least on the places he's been. but he's so self-effacing, i'm not surprised he's writing on the undersides of tables, where no one will ever see. it's like he has a secret, and i can't imagine he had many of those at that point in his life.

also i love the idea that he never thought to get a real driver's license when he was sixteen and actually could, and that sam has to suggest it to him. sam's a little more aware of how normal people (ie, non-winchesters) do things.

*happy sighs* This is beautiful and so very Dean, leaving his mark in quiet ways, unobtrusive but there, a mirror of himself. Somehow I have this image now in my head of a tiny stick figure that barely comes up to the ankles of other stick figures in the drawing, saying in a word balloon: I'm right here. *shakes head at my own silliness, laughing*
